From Livingstone to Miracle: A Smile That Keeps Growing

When we first shared his story, the world knew him as Livingstone. He was so tiny when he was born, and so much was happening so fast, that his parents did not even have the opportunity to give him a name of his own. So they named him in tribute to the local cleft surgeon who may have saved his life, Dr. Livingstone. As the boy grew and thrived, his parents chose a permanent name that told the true story of his life: Miracle.

But his path from Livingstone to Miracle has not been smooth or straightforward.

“Miracle wasn't always like this,” his mother, Minda, recalls. “He struggled with very low self-esteem and constantly asked why he looked different from other children.” 

A Difficult Beginning

When Miracle was born with a cleft lip and palate, his parents were completely unprepared.

“We had hoped to have a baby like any other,” his father, Alex, remembers. Questions, fears, and uncertainty overwhelmed the young couple.

The family's greatest challenge emerged almost immediately. Miracle’s cleft stopped him from feeding properly. Within two days, he had started losing weight, and Minda’s worries grew.

Then came a ray of hope. Compassionate nurses reassured the family that help was available and referred them to CoRSU Rehabilitation Hospital, a Smile Train partner right in their city, Entebbe. Miracle was only two days old when his parents walked through its doors.

At CoRSU, a multidisciplinary team of specialists welcomed them. When Alex told Dr. George Galiwango, the hospital’s head of plastic and reconstructive surgery, that he had been told CoRSU might be able to help his child, the doctor replied, without hesitation:

Do not say CoRSU might be able to help. We will work on your child, and he will be fine.

“That meeting changed everything,” says Minda. “It gave us hope we had never felt before.”

Care That Saves Lives Before Surgery

At this critical stage, CoRSU's nutrition team stepped in. They assessed Miracle, taught Minda specialized feeding techniques for babies with clefts, and guided her on safely preparing alternative methods when breastmilk alone was not enough.

“I did not understand why my baby was not feeding,” Minda recalls. “By the time we arrived at CoRSU, he had already started to lose weight. I think my baby could have died of hunger if we had delayed coming.”

Soon, Miracle was gaining weight and seemed to be growing stronger by the hour. After four months, he was healthy enough for his first surgery, to heal his cleft lip. Two more surgeries followed over time to treat his palate, giving him a stronger foundation for feeding, speech, and everything still to come. 

Restoring More Than a Smile

As Miracle approached school age, another challenge emerged: his speech. His family returned to CoRSU, where he began working with a speech and language therapist Smile Train specially trained to specialize in treating children with clefts. The therapy played a critical role in helping him develop clear speech, and today Miracle speaks confidently and is easily understood by everyone around him.

His care did not stop there. In 2024, CoRSU referred him for orthodontic treatment after concerns emerged about the development of his teeth and jaw. Miracle has continued this treatment for nearly two years now, and the improvement has been remarkable.

Overcoming Emotional Scars

The physical challenges were only part of Miracle's journey. At school, some children mocked his dental appearance and gave him a cruel nickname.

“It made him feel worthless,” Minda says. “Sometimes, he became angry and reacted violently because he was hurting inside.”

Once again, family made the difference. Minda made it a priority to continuously counsel and encourage her son, and his teachers, sensitized about his condition, became important allies in building his confidence. 

Today, the transformation is clear as the smile on his face.

Looking Toward the Future

Although Miracle continues orthodontic treatment, his progress has been extraordinary. He eats well, communicates effectively, participates actively at school, and approaches life with confidence.

Most importantly, he dares to dream.

“I want to be an astronaut one day,” Miracle says with excitement. “Things to do with planets fascinate me. I have enjoyed living on Earth, but I want to experience other planets, too.”

As he enthusiastically names the planets one by one, it becomes clear that the shy little boy who once questioned why he looked different has grown into a young dreamer whose eyes are fixed firmly on the stars.
