Yvonne Kavuo joined Smile Train in October 2015 as Program Manager for the DR Congo. In her role she supports the development, running and follow up of cleft care programs in various treatment centres across the DRC. During her time, Yvonne works to expand cleft surgical training and education programs and to increase the local surgical, anesthesia and nursing capacity so that the local hospitals and health professionals could take care of their own patients. Driven by her dedication to improve the lives of the most vulnerable children, she collaborates with the Ministry of Health and Church organizations to create awareness to bring in more patients for cleft treatment and to uphold the common goal of increasing safe and quality patient care in DRC.
Previously, Yvonne Kavuo served as Program Director in various international NGOs, namely the World Council of Churches, the German-based United Evangelical Mission, etc, where she led the implementation of HIV/AIDS prevention programs in Central Africa through partnering with local churches and building church leaders capacity to spearhead community-based interventions that bring restoration to those affected and infected. Her work contributed to inspire and facilitate the engagement of a coalition of local faith leaders partnering with key stakeholders such as UNAIDS, UN-Women, UNFPA, the Global Fund, etc.
She received a Masters’ Degree in Health Planning and Policy from the Queen Margaret University of Edinburgh-UK, and a Post graduate Diploma in Development Planning at the University of Wales/Swansea, UK, specializing in the management of health and development programs.
