Children with clefts’ speech and communication development should be followed closely by a trained speech professional as they grow. Early surgical intervention is usually the most effective way to help these children learn to speak clearly, but no matter when they had cleft palate surgery, they may still need specialized therapy to correct their speech. They may also need a second palate surgery to ensure that their mouths can produce clear speech.
